The Member of Parliament for Effutu in the Central Region and Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has issued a stern warning to Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and Acting Judicial Service Secretary, Dr Cyracus Badinye Bapuuroh, cautioning them against complacency in the removal of Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
“Do not become complacent simply because you may not be directly affected by the suspension of Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkonoo,” Mr Afenyo-Markin reiterated.
The Minority Leader also called on members of the Judicial Service to unite in defence of their institution amid growing concern over the suspension of Chief Justice Torkonoo.
He gave the warning during the presentation of a petition by the New Patriotic Party (NPP)-led opposition coalition at the Supreme Court, as part of the ongoing “Save the Judiciary” protest.
Addressing the gathering on Monday, May 5, 2025, Afenyo-Markin described the suspension of the Chief Justice as a direct threat to judicial independence and democratic stability.
“The judiciary is our last hope, and we believe that what is happening undermines our democracy. For the Chief Justice to be singled out for this ‘unfortunate’ attack, a flimsy pedestrian petition.
The Council of State has failed the government, and we want you as an institution to put aside your individual differences and know that it is your institution that is under attack.
Maybe today it is Torkonoo, tomorrow it may be you. You don’t serve at the whims and caprices of a political party and a government,” he said.
