The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has firmly denied claims that there is a political plot to remove the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esabaa Torkornoo, from office.
Speaking to the media in response to the Chief Justice’s earlier statement on Wednesday, 25, 2025, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said there is no hidden political agenda behind the steps taken by President John Dramani Mahama. He stressed that the President has strictly followed the 1992 Constitution, especially Article 146, which outlines the process for removing a judge.
“There has not been a single violation of the Constitution in this matter; every action the President has taken has been by the book, in line with the law, and with full respect to the Chief Justice’s office,” he stated.
He added that no one has been able to point out any constitutional breach in the President’s handling of the case.
Mr. Ofosu Kwakye was responding to concerns raised by the Chief Justice in a press briefing, where she suggested that the ongoing proceedings to remove her may be politically motivated.
“Let me be clear—there is no political agenda at all. The President took an oath to uphold the Constitution, and he is simply fulfilling that duty.”
He further explained that when a petition is received against a public official, the President is required by law to act and cannot ignore it based on personal opinion.
“The Chief Justice herself swore in the President, who promised to abide by the Constitution. That is exactly what he is doing,” Mr. Ofosu Kwakye said.
He emphasized that no public official is above the law and that everyone, from the President down to civil servants, is accountable under the Constitution.
“we cannot have a sacred cow mentality in the way that we handle state affairs every single public official, from the President to the speaker, to the Chief Justice, to Supreme Court judges, to ministers, to all public office holders are bound by the provisions of Ghanaian law” he added.
The Minister concluded by saying that it is unfortunate that such claims are being made, especially when the President has acted with full transparency and in line with the law.
