Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, sparked commotion in Akwatia this morning after allegedly instructing the removal of posters near a polling station.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, who was in the constituency with New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong to observe the ongoing by-election, reportedly asked his team to take down candidate posters located close to a polling station on September 2, 2025.
The action led to a misunderstanding between the two main parties, the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections, Rashid Tanko-Computer, the Minority Leader’s conduct was unlawful. He explained that the constitution clearly outlines the procedure for removing campaign posters near polling stations.
Mr Tanko-Computer added that if the NDC were to take matters into their own hands, they could equally decide to demolish an NPP office located near one of the polling stations, but stressed that such actions would be inappropriate.
The incident has drawn condemnation from sections of the public, with critics arguing that the Minority Leader’s partisan position prevents him from executing duties reserved for lawful authorities.
The by-election in Akwatia was triggered by the sudden death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi. The contest is between Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP and Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC.
