The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has cautioned against what he described as attempts to use the courts to override the will of the people in the Kpandai parliamentary election dispute.
Speaking on GTV’s Current Agenda: Your Voice, Your Power, Mr Ahiagbah said the NPP’s decision to seek legal redress was not about overturning the verdict of voters, but about defending constitutional rights clearly set out in law.
He said the NPP won the election by a margin of 3,734 votes, insisting that the result reflected the expressed will of the people of Kpandai. “The role of the court is not to determine who represents the people. The court must protect the ballot, not replace it,” he noted.
Mr Ahiagbah warned that allowing courts to overturn election results on procedural grounds could undermine public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions and encourage future electoral disputes to be settled in courtrooms rather than at the ballot box.
He added that democracy would be weakened if judicial processes were allowed to supersede the clear will of voters, stressing that electoral disputes must always be handled in a manner that strengthens public confidence in the electoral system.
