Private Legal Practitioner, Kwame Owusu Danso Esq., has expressed opposition to abolishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), drawing a comparison with Parliament, which remains despite falling short of expectations.

“We wouldn’t scrap Parliament simply because it has fallen short of the people’s expectations, so why scrap the OSP? I do not support abolishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he noted.

Lawyer Danso’s stance on GBC’s Current Agenda on Saturday, December 6, 2025, contrasts with Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga’s call to scrap the OSP, citing its failure to deliver significant results in fighting corruption.

The OSP has been under scrutiny following the arrest and detention of lawyer Martin Kpebu, who criticised Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng’s actions. The incident sparked debate on the OSP’s effectiveness and relevance. While some argue the office is necessary for Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, others believe it’s a duplication of existing institutions.

Parliament has seen divided opinions, with some MPs supporting the abolition, citing lack of achievements, while others argue it is essential for accountability.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has agreed to consider abolishing the OSP, proposing a private member’s bill or an executive-led amendment.
