President John Dramani Mahama’s current four-year mandate is about building a lasting legacy, not seeking a third term, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team has said.
Emmanuel Mettle-Nunoo Junior told GBC’s ‘Weekly Press Review’ on Friday, August 29, 2025 that President Mahama’s second presidency is “about managing resources to achieve results,” not staying in office longer. He said four years is enough to execute an agenda.

The communicator also explained that speculation about a third term is “normal” given the NDC’s parliamentary majority, its 2024 electoral performance and goodwill with voters. But, he noted that, President Mahama has already ruled out those speculations.
“Even if there were pressure from the party, I don’t think it would change anything,” he said. “This is the time to work and deliver the promises we made to Ghanaians.”
Emmanuel Mettle-Nunoo Junior added that President Mahama intends to avoid the election-year overspending that often undermines Ghana’s economic progress. He described the president’s current mandate as a “legacy term” meant to set standards for the future.
Ghana’s 1992 Constitution bars presidents from serving more than two terms, making a third run legally impossible.
Mr Mettle-Nunoo said the NDC has “a lot of competent people” to take over after Mahama, though he cautioned it is too early to discuss who will succeed him as flagbearer.
