Minority Members of Parliament say they will spend the night at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in protest over the continued detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi was picked up by EOCO on Tuesday, May 27, after reporting to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning. Though he has been granted bail of GH¢50 million, he remains in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin described the bail terms as excessive and unjust, adding that the Minority would no longer participate in parliamentary proceedings until Wontumi is released.
“We are all going to sleep there with him. We don’t have GH¢50 million worth of property,” Mr Afenyo-Markin said. “EOCO must do the right thing.”
He warned that the treatment of Wontumi could set a dangerous precedent for the country and urged all lawmakers to reject what he called “selective justice.”
“We must send a strong signal not only to EOCO but to all state institutions: respect the law, follow due process, and treat every citizen with dignity,” he said.
