Western Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Issah Fuseini, has emphasised that being in government is not a prerequisite for helping the people of Akwatia. According to him, individuals can make a positive impact in their communities regardless of whether their party is in power.
“Your government does not have to be in power before you help the good people of Akwatia,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on GBC on September 2, 2025, regarding the ongoing Akwatia by-election, Mr Fuseini argued that true service to the people is driven by commitment, not political position. He added that the ability to serve one’s constituency should not be measured solely by a party’s status in government.
He cited NPP Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other opposition MPs who have continued to serve their constituents wholeheartedly despite their party not being in government.
“Does it mean that Afenyo-Markin and other NPP MPs, there is nothing going on in their constituencies because they are in opposition?” he asked.
According to Mr Fuseini, having the will to help people is crucial. Without genuine intentions, even those in power may fail to deliver meaningful support.
“Even if your government is in power but you do not have it in your heart to help your people, you will not do it,” he stressed.
He also criticised some MPs who have been in Parliament for years yet cannot boast of a single borehole in their constituencies.
Mr Fuseini further suggested that MPs partner with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as an effective way to support their communities rather than relying solely on government resources.
He urged the people of Akwatia to vote for the NPP candidate, Solomon Asumadu, assuring them they would not be disappointed. He noted that Mr Asumadu has already been supporting the people of Akwatia even before being selected to represent the party.
This comes as voters in Akwatia head to the polls to elect a new MP following the death of Ernest Yaw Kumi of the NPP.
