The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has described the High Court’s ruling on the Kpandai 2024 parliamentary election as a “constitutional abomination” and a serious concern for Ghana’s democracy.
Justice Emmanuel Brew Plange annulled the 2024 parliamentary election results for the Kpandai constituency and ordered a fresh poll within 30 days, following a successful legal challenge.
Addressing journalists in Accra, Henry Nana Boakye said the judgment was deeply flawed and ignored key electoral laws. He argued that the decision undermines justice and could weaken the nation’s democratic institutions.
According to him, the petitioner challenged only 500 votes, yet the court canceled an entire election won with a margin of 3,734 votes. He said the ruling “defies basic logic” and fails to meet the legal requirement that irregularities must be significant enough to affect the final results before an election can be overturned.
Mr. Boakye also accused the judge of ignoring Regulation 48 of CI 127, which states that the absence of a candidate or agent does not invalidate actions taken by a Returning Officer.
Describing the ruling as “reckless, dangerous, and legally unsound,” he warned that allowing it to stand could set a precedent that affects the stability of Ghana’s electoral system.
While reaffirming the NPP’s respect for the judiciary, he stressed that the party will not remain silent in the face of what he called a major injustice.
“Democracy must be protected,” Henry Nana Boakye said, urging Ghanaians to stay alert as the party works to challenge the ruling through all lawful means.
