The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed shock and sorrow over the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia Constituency.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 7, 2025, the regional leadership described Kumi’s passing as a major blow to the party, the constituency, and the nation at large.

“This heartbreaking news has come as a great shock to the Party, the people of Akwatia, and the nation at large,” a portion of the statement read.

The late MP, affectionately known as the “Akwatia Star Boy,” was celebrated for his unwavering commitment to the development of his constituency and dedication to the ideals of the New Patriotic Party.

The NPP extended condolences to his family, the chiefs and people of Akwatia, and the entire party fraternity nationwide.

“May the soul of our beloved brother and compatriot rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.

Ernest Yaw Kumi was serving his first term in Ghana’s Parliament, having been elected during the 2024 general elections.

Until his death, he was still engaged in legal proceedings brought against him by the Parliamentary Candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary poll in Akwatia.

The NPP noted that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
