The revision of the voters’ register seems to have become a routine during election years. As election 2020 approaches, discussions on a review of the voters’ register have again reared its head with the usual disagreements between the two major political parties, the NPP and the NDC.

The Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Reverend Professor, Emmanuel Asante, is calling for cool heads to discuss the issue.

In an interview with GBC’s George Ankrah, Most Reverend Professor Asante reiterated the need for consensus on the essence of reviewing the voters’ register to avoid any confusion or problem that will compromise the peace in the country before, during and after next year’s elections.

The Electoral Commission has asked Parliament to approve GH¢444,846,663 for the compilation of a new voters’ register.

As part of its activities for the year 2020, the Commission wants to compile a new register for the general elections.

EC on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, asked Parliament to approve ¢444,846,663 for the compilation of a new voters’ register prior to the 2020 general election.

In its budget, the EC also allocated GH¢287,842,511 for the conduct of elections.

More than GH¢27million has also been requested for voter and electoral education and GH¢1.2million for demarcation of electoral boundaries.
