The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described the arrest of its National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi as “unlawful and draconian”.

The party at the news conference addressed by the Director of Communications on Tuesday January 28, Lawyer Kakra Essamuah, said this “frivolous arrest was orchestrated by NPP Government”.

According to him, “ordering the Police Service to carry out unlawful and draconian arrests has never saved any President from being thrown out when his time is up.”

“High-handed and hot-headed measures can never mask the glaring ineptitude of his government and the crisis they have plunged this country into,” he observed.

On January 27, 2020, Mr. Gyamfi was apprehended by officials believed to be from the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) while heading towards his car after participating in a discussion on an Accra-based TV station.

He was later cautioned and granted bail after some hours.

The police in a statement justified the rest as they accused the Samuel Gyamfi of having fake documents and publishing the content of that fake without recourse to Public Order Act and other laws.

But the NDC, according to the Director of Communications, believes that “the people of Ghana are clear about what they face in their daily lives and the unbearable difficulties occasioned by the poor management of the country’s affairs by this government and will not be swayed by trumped up by frivolous charges against leading members of the opposition”.

He submitted that, Mr. Gyamfi’s lawyers will take prompt action on his arrest but as “we await these steps, we wish to make clear to President Akufo-Addo and his government that the path of intimidation and harassment they have chosen is a futile one”.

“If the intent is to cow the NDC into keeping quiet over the horrible governance he is offering, then he is grossly mistaken.”

The Director stressed that, “the NDC is an unshakable force that has dominated the country’s politics since our return to constitutional rule.”

“We more than possess the capacity to withstand and fend off such brazen attacks on our leaders and members.”

“While remaining law abiding, we will not sit like ducks on top of water to be picked up one after the other by a handful of rogue elements within the Police acting on misguided orders from the Presidency.”
