Sunday’s sun dipped low over Baba Yara Stadium, casting shadows on Asante Kotoko ahead of the Super Clash against Hearts of Oak on February 15, 2026 following the resignation of head coach, Abdul Karim Zito Kabutey.
The Kumasi-based giants confirmed on Monday, February 9, 2026, that Zito has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, a decision accepted by the club’s management. In a brief statement, Kotoko thanked the coach for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Zito’s departure comes on the back of Kotoko’s disappointing exit from the MTN FA Cup on Sunday, February 8, 2026. The Porcupine Warriors were eliminated at the Baba Yara Stadium after losing 4–2 on penalties to Aduana FC, following a goalless draw at the end of regulation time.
The defeat dealt a significant blow to the club’s hopes of silverware this season and is believed to have influenced the timing of the coach’s decision.
With the resignation taking immediate effect, Kotoko now face the daunting task of preparing for one of Ghanaian football’s fiercest fixtures without a head coach in place. The Super Clash against Hearts of Oak often carries implications that extend beyond league points, adding to the pressure surrounding the encounter.
Club officials have indicated that the team’s new technical direction will be communicated in due course, suggesting interim arrangements could be announced ahead of the high-profile match.
Attention will now turn to how the playing squad responds to the sudden change as Kotoko look to rally themselves and deliver a strong performance against their oldest rivals amid uncertainty on the technical bench.
