President of the Weightlifting Federation of Ghana and Second Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib has expressed his disappointment over the amount of attention and funding accorded football at the expense of other sporting activities in the country.
“In Ghana, there is so much attention given to one particular sport to the total neglect of other sports they term, “lesser-known sports”. There is a lot of focus on football which even gives Ghanaians broken heart”, he said.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Mr. Shaib noted that Ghana’s sports development is facing a major imbalance, with resources allocated to football, leaving other disciplines struggling. He therefore called for a relook at how sports can be developed in the country.
The Sports Minister, Kofi Adams has also tabled the Sports Fund Bill before Parliament, aiming to create a sustainable financial framework for all sporting disciplines. The proposed fund will draw from 14 revenue sources, including sports lotteries, betting taxes, and athlete transfer fees.
