Dental health specialists are warning that preventable conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease remain among the most common health challenges affecting children, often linked to poor brushing habits and frequent consumption of sugary foods.

To promote early screening and improve oral hygiene practices, dental professionals from Entrance University of Health Sciences organized an outreach program for pupils at Anny Memorial International School in Spintex, Tema metropolitan area.

The exercise included oral examinations for the pupils, along with demonstrations of the correct way to brush and maintain healthy teeth. The dental team also took the children through simple daily habits that help protect teeth from common conditions such as cavities and gum infections.

Pupils who underwent the screening were given dental hygiene items, including toothbrushes and other oral care products, to support proper dental care at home.

The Proprietress of Anny Memorial International School, Mrs Mavis Annor Yeboah Totime, said the school regularly organises health programmes for its learners as part of efforts to promote their overall wellbeing.

She noted that good health remains essential for effective learning and development, explaining that children who experience dental problems may miss school or find it difficult to concentrate in class.

Mrs. Totime expressed the hope that the exercise would encourage parents to pay closer attention to their children’s oral health. She also indicated that many of the pupils examined during the screening demonstrated good oral hygiene practices, which she described as encouraging.

Some of the pupils said the exercise had helped them understand the proper way to brush their teeth and the importance of maintaining good dental hygiene.

Health professionals advise parents to ensure children brush their teeth at least twice a day, reduce the intake of sugary foods, and visit dental clinics regularly for check-ups.

They say early preventive care remains one of the most effective ways of protecting children from long-term dental complications.
