Real Madrid have part ways with head coach Xabi Alonso just hours after their dramatic 3-2 defeat to rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The club announced the departure by “mutual consent,” putting an end to the 44-year-old’s short tenure at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Speculation about Alonso’s future had swirled amid reports of dressing room unrest, with the former midfielder reportedly lacking full support from the squad.
Alonso, who joined Real Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, oversaw a turbulent spell that culminated in Sunday’s late collapse against Barcelona.
Less than 24 hours after the loss, the club moved swiftly to end his contract, framing the split as an amicable decision. This development shocks fans, given Alonso’s status as a club legend from his playing days.
In an official statement, Real Madrid expressed gratitude and affection for the Spaniard. “Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the club said.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.”
The statement continued, praising Alonso’s technical team: “Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”
Despite the positive tone, the timing raises questions about internal pressures at the club.
This abrupt change leaves Los Blancos fans reeling, with the pressure on to steady the ship in La Liga and the Champions League.
