The Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev John Bonaventure Kwofie has observed that, one of the key elements in ensuring a peaceful election is the Electoral Commission (EC) being visibly seen to be impartial by the parties involved in the contest.
This he is of the view that if it is the case leaves any party which loses the election no choice but to accept the results.
The Most Rev Kwofie in an interview on the sidelines of his pastoral visit to the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in the Tema Metropolis of the Greater Accra Region said the EC owes the citizenry a free and fair election.
He said because an election is usually characterised by emotions with every political party determined to wind, all those who play various roles in the exercise with key among them being the EC must ensure that they preserve the relative peace the country is currently enjoying.
He advised that the Commission puts all the necessary measures in place so that the elections will be smooth before, during and after the event.
That said, the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra also called on the various political parties to adhere to the rules and regulations of the elections as stated by the EC.
He charged the aspirants to do everything humanly possible to ensure that the peace of the country is preserved.
He discouraged the use of intemperate languages because according to him, that does not facilitate a healthy contest.
“When there is peace, there is happiness and the country progresses” he said as he called on all those involved in the elections in one way or the other to make peace their focus.
“We should all do everything we can to preserve the peace we have” he said.
He stressed the need for all Christians to be at the forefront of preaching peace so that others would be attracted to do same.
In his homily, Most Rev Kwofie highlighted the need for everyone to live at peace with their neighbours and treat them as they wish to be treated.
He said the way a person related with others was important to their relationship with God and so as Christians they should build all broken down relationships with their loved ones.
He also charged the older generation to work hard at encouraging the youth to uphold their Catholic faith and by extension work at the growth of the church.
