The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has criticised his predecessor, Francis Asenso-Boakye, over what he describes as the failure of the previous administration to complete the Suame Interchange project by the end of 2024 as earlier promised.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, February 9, Mr. Agbodza said the current debate surrounding the status and scope of the project would not have arisen if the former government had fulfilled its commitment. His comments come in response to claims by the Ashanti Caucus of the Minority in Parliament that the Suame Interchange project has been downgraded from its original four-tier design to a two-tier facility.

According to the Minister, former President Nana Akufo-Addo publicly declared that the interchange would be completed and handed over by the close of 2024. He argued that the delays occurred under the previous administration and should not be attributed to the current government.

“Former President Akufo-Addo declared that by the end of 2024, the Suame Interchange project would have been completed and handed over,” Mr. Agbodza stated.

“If Hon. Asenso-Boakye had followed Akufo-Addo’s plan, we wouldn’t even be discussing whether it should be three-tier or four-tier now. This delay is due to his failure and the previous government’s failure to deliver. We are committed to completing the project for the good people of Kumasi,” he added.

Mr. Agbodza maintained that the government remains focused on delivering the project and addressing traffic congestion challenges in Kumasi, stressing that the administration is determined to see the interchange completed in the interest of residents and road users.
