Manchester United have dismissed manager Ruben Amorim following a public fallout with club officials, particularly director of football Jason Wilcox.

The Portuguese coach’s tenure ended after a 1-1 draw against Leeds United on Sunday, marking his final game in charge.

Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag in November 2024, leaves Old Trafford with the team in sixth place in the Premier League after eight wins from 20 games this season.

Tensions boiled over during Amorim’s post-match press conference ahead of the Leeds trip, where he expressed frustration over limited January transfer activity.

He escalated criticism after the draw, insisting he was hired as “manager, not the coach” and urging Wilcox to “do his job.” This breakdown in relations with key figures like Wilcox prompted the swift decision from United’s hierarchy.

Amorim’s 14-month spell proved turbulent, with 24 wins from 63 matches overall and only 15 Premier League victories.

Despite high expectations from his success at Sporting Lisbon, United struggled for consistency, sitting mid-table at times and facing relegation concerns earlier in the season.

His departure underscores ongoing instability at the club, now searching for a new direction.

Darren Fletcher, currently the Under-18s boss, steps in as interim manager ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Burnley.

Fletcher’s experience includes prior technical director roles and academy development, offering short-term stability.

United face mounting pressure to appoint a long-term successor amid speculation linking names like Zinedine Zidane, though he has shown reluctance.

The sacking highlights deeper structural issues at Manchester United, from recruitment disputes to inconsistent on-pitch results.

Fans and observers question the board’s strategy as the club aims to climb the table and revive European ambitions. Further details on the next permanent appointment remain unclear.
