Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has announced plans to create an enabling environment for shea butter processors to add value to the country’s market, with the goal of creating jobs and boosting economic growth.
“The Ministry is creating an enabling environment for shea butter processors to add value to our raw materials here in Ghana so that we can create jobs”, he said.
Speaking during the government accountability series on Monday, November 24, 2025, Mr. Opoku explained that the initiative forms part of government’s Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to enhance local agricultural production, minimize reliance on food imports, and create sustainable job opportunities.
The Minister also emphasized the importance of adding value to Ghana’s raw materials, stating that the country exports raw materials and earns very little, only to buy back finished products at higher prices. He noted that the government is supporting small- and medium-scale processors with low-interest loans, credit guarantees, and insurance packages to move from potential to profitability.
He also highlighted the potential of the shea butter industry, which is a significant source of income for many women in Ghana. By investing in agro-processing, the government aims to empower women, ensure food security, and reduce the country’s import bill.
