Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has praised the intelligence of the monkeys at the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, emphasizing that their behaviour reflects the broader value of wit over might.
“These monkeys play by intelligence and not only by size,” the Minister remarked during a working tour of the sanctuary.
The visit formed part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting the Volta Region’s rich tourism potential and positioning it as a key destination for both local and international visitors.
Mr. Gunu toured the facility, interacted with community members, and observed firsthand the harmony between the monkeys and the local residents — a unique feature of the eco-tourism site. He commended the community for preserving the sanctuary, highlighting it as a model for sustainable tourism and environmental conservation.
“This sanctuary is not just about wildlife; it is about community ownership, conservation, and smart tourism,” he said.

The Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, home to hundreds of sacred Mona monkeys, has gained national and international attention for its community-based conservation efforts and the spiritual reverence attached to the animals.
Mr. Gunu encouraged Ghanaians and tourists alike to explore hidden gems like Tafi Atome, noting that the Volta Region remains a vital part of Ghana’s tourism map.
The Minister’s visit is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the tourism sector across the region, with stops planned at other notable sites in the coming weeks.
