Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema weighed into the cultural debate that has erupted online after the Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama arrived in Zambia wearing a traditional outfit called the fugu or smock. Some Zambians mockingly called it a “blouse”.
But Zambia’s President hit back by sharing his love for the design, saying he would be “ordering more of that stuff” for himself.
Speaking on the demand, Ghana’s Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, has encouraged the youth to tap into Zambia’s high demand for fugu (smocks).
He believes they can create jobs by weaving these traditional textiles, including Kente showcasing Ghana’s unique culture.
“I urge the youth to take advantage of the fugu demand as well as Kente to create jobs out of it. They should go where the demand is and let people see that we are unique”, he noted on GTV breakfast show.
