U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major change in his approach to the war in Ukraine, confirming that the United States will send Patriot missile defense systems and other advanced weapons to Ukraine through NATO. The move marks a sharp shift in Trump’s stance toward Russia and signals a tougher U.S. position in the conflict.
The announcement came just days after a massive Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, which left several regions badly damaged. Trump also threatened new economic penalties, saying the U.S. will consider “secondary tariffs” on countries that continue to buy Russian oil.
He made the comments during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House.
Trump, who has previously been seen as soft on Russia, expressed growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “My conversations with him are very pleasant, and then the missiles go off at night,” Trump said, claiming that Putin had fooled other U.S. presidents but not him. He added that his patience is wearing thin and hinted that stronger steps may follow if the war continues.
The Kremlin reacted quickly, calling Trump’s remarks “very serious.” Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Putin would review the situation before responding, but warned that Ukraine and its allies may see the U.S. move as a reason to prolong the conflict instead of seeking peace.
Meanwhile, Trump’s announcement was welcomed by several European leaders. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas said supporting Ukraine is essential for peace, and she called for more pressure on Russia, including tougher sanctions. The shift in U.S. policy could reshape the next phase of the war, putting new pressure on Moscow as it continues its attacks on Ukrainian cities.
