Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for deeper collaboration between government and traditional authorities to accelerate local development across Ghana.
She made the call at Kete Krachi during the 25th anniversary of the enstoolment of Nana Mprah Besemuna III, urging the youth to take advantage of emerging economic opportunities to drive growth in the Oti Region.
The colourful durbar brought together chiefs, opinion leaders, government officials and residents, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Krachi people.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President underscored the vital role of chieftaincy in national development, describing traditional leaders as indispensable partners in governance and community transformation.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang commended the Krachiwura for promoting peace, unity and progress in the traditional area, and reaffirmed government’s commitment to decentralisation. She stressed that empowering local governance structures would enhance development planning and improve service delivery.
“Uncertainty weakens institutions, divides communities, and stalls development. Where traditional authority is clear and stable, communities organise better, attract investment more confidently, and move forward with purpose,” she said, adding that strengthening chieftaincy is a necessary step toward sustainable development.
The Vice President noted that government is shifting focus to strengthen decision-making at the local level, ensuring that district assemblies operate with greater coordination and responsiveness to community needs.
She further encouraged the youth to leverage initiatives such as the 24-hour economy to boost agro-processing, trade and job creation, highlighting the area’s potential in agriculture, fisheries and transportation.
On chieftaincy reforms, she indicated that efforts are underway to enhance traditional governance systems and improve dispute resolution mechanisms nationwide, stressing that unity and partnership remain key to addressing development challenges.
For his part, Nana Mprah Besemuna III expressed appreciation for the recognition and pledged to continue advancing development in the area, with a focus on infrastructure, education and youth empowerment.
