Former Morocco coach Walid Regragui has distanced himself from Ghana’s vacant coaching job, with sources confirming that he has no interest in taking over the Black Stars. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is searching for a new head coach after sacking Otto Addo on Monday, 31 March 2026, following a 5‑1 loss to Austria and a 2‑1 defeat to Germany in the March international window.
GFA previously eyed World Cup semifinalist
Earlier reports indicated that the GFA had contacted Regragui to explore his availability, given his reputation as the coach who guided Morocco to the 2022 World Cup semi‑finals in Qatar. Sources say Regragui responded through his agent to make it clear that he does not want the Ghana job at this time.
Saudis set to be his next destination
It has been widely reported that Regragui is now in line to replace Hervé Renard as head coach of Saudi Arabia, following Renard’s departure after a friendlies defeat to Serbia. His success in building a disciplined, resilient Moroccan side has made him one of the most coveted coaches on the continent, exposing Ghana to strong competition for proven managers.
Other names in the frame for Ghana
Meanwhile, several high‑profile names have been linked to the vacant Black Stars job, including Kwesi Appiah, Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet and, before his Saudi move, Hervé Renard. The GFA is now under pressure to find a coach who can quickly stabilize the team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Pre‑World Cup fix‑ture schedule set
The Black Stars are due to regroup in May and June for their final preparatory friendlies, with matches against Mexico and Wales scheduled. Ghana will contest Group L at the tournament alongside Panama, England and Croatia, with their campaign starting on 11 June across the USA, Canada and Mexico.
