In the quest to revive Ghana’s local league, GBC Sports+ created a program “Saving Our Passion”, to ignite interest in the local league among football lovers in Ghana. A member of the Kotoko Management, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh during one of the meetings said football in today’s world has evolved a lot in the sense that now football lovers have different alternatives to entertain themselves.

He said the Clubs needed to do more to be able to attract more people to watch their matches.

Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh, highlighted impediments of the game, saying revenue sources for games were not diverse.

“It’s cheaper to watch a very well produced English premiership match than to watch a local league game because if he has to go to the stadium, he has to get transportation and then there is also poor quality pitch”, he said.

He added that, in the past the only means of watching football games was on GTV or watching highlights on the Kwabena Yeboah show but now people have alternatives to choose from.

“If GTV doesn’t share the game, it’s only Kwabena Yeboah’s Show that will highlight it, that generation is long gone”

He applauded Kumasi Asante Kotoko for creating the virtual seat challenge aimed at growing funds from the local fanbase.

“I think Kumasi Asante Kotoko is doing a wonderful job. This virtual seat challenge. Once a while we pay to watch the match virtually, not that we get to see the match. We are assuming that we bought the seat at the Kumasi sports stadium which means that the money goes straight to the clubs without government interference or the FA. That is an innovative way of making money”, he posited.

He said unprofessionalism will be a thing of the past if Clubs can generate money from their supporter base.

“If Kotoko can guarantee that every month at least the management has about GH¢ 200,000 that is coming from the support base through the monthly contribution, then they can start thinking about professionalism”, according to Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh

He also entreated the Football Association (FA) to promote games in terms of advertising.
