Former President of Ghana and Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, in a recent appearance on GBC’s Presidential Encounters, addressed pressing issues facing the national football team, the Black Stars. His insights came during a discussion facilitated by STAR Ghana Foundation, where he expressed deep concern over the current state of the team, labeling it as a period of demotivation.

Mahama emphasized that the Ministry of Youth and Sports has become overly focused on the Black Stars, suggesting that this singular attention has contributed to the team’s struggles in recent years. “The Ministry of Youth and Sports as it is currently is the Ministry of the Black Stars”. He noted that while FIFA regulations restrict government interference in national team affairs, the government must still be prepared to offer support when necessary. This delicate balance between autonomy and assistance is crucial for fostering a thriving football environment in Ghana.

One of the key points raised by Mahama was the lack of cohesion within the team, particularly the disconnect between local players and their foreign counterparts. He argued that a successful national team must integrate the best talent from the local league with experienced players abroad. This strategy, he believes, would not only enhance team performance but also promote a sense of unity and shared purpose among the players.

“We need to pick the best players from the local league to blend in with the foreign ones to represent the Black Stars,” said Mahama.

The Black Stars, who are four-time champions of Africa will for the first time since 2004 will not be participating in the prestigious AFCON tournament in Morocco.
