Legendary boxer Azumah Nelson has been named Vice Chairman and Special Technical Advisor to Ghana’s newly inaugurated Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC).
The committee was launched on Monday, September 29, 2026, by Sports Minister Kofi Adams to oversee and reform professional boxing in the country.
The nine-member IMC is chaired by former Ghana Boxing Authority President Samir Captan and includes experts from diverse fields.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Accra, Kofi Adams emphasized the committee’s role in restoring integrity, professionalism, and safety to Ghanaian boxing, a sport celebrated for global icons like Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Joseph Agbeko.
Kofi Adams highlighted recent concerns over the decline in standards within Ghana’s boxing scene, pointing to increased unprofessional conduct and weakened regulatory oversight.
The tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju at the Bukom Boxing Arena served as a critical wake-up call, stressing the urgent need for decisive reforms.
Under the leadership of Captan and with Nelson’s technical guidance, the IMC is tasked with restructuring the Professional Boxing Association. Their mandate includes enforcing stronger medical protocols, insurance coverage, and safety measures to protect athletes.
