Mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu has responded firmly to President Donald Trump’s threat to move 2026 FIFA World Cup games out of the city following recent violent clashes. The unrest included attacks on police vehicles and the burning of a police car, prompting Trump to question Boston’s safety as a host city.

According to Fox News, Trump, affirmed he loves the people of Boston, but criticized Mayor Wu’s leadership. He warned that if conditions were deemed unsafe, he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino to relocate the games to another city, acknowledging this would be an unwanted but necessary step.

Mayor Wu, a Democrat, expressed a contrasting message, emphasizing Boston’s readiness and enthusiasm to host the matches. She highlighted the city’s historical significance and hospitality, stating, “Boston is honored and excited to host World Cup matches, and we look forward to welcoming fans from around the world to our beautiful city, the cradle of liberty and city of champions.”

Next year, the United States will co-host the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada, with Boston among the selected host cities. The recent disturbances have raised concerns, but city officials remain determined to prove their capability to stage the global event safely.
