Fenerbahçe have officially parted ways with manager José Mourinho, ending the Portuguese coach’s tenure after the club’s disappointing exit from the Champions League play-offs. The Istanbul-based club announced the decision on Friday, August 29, 2025, citing both the team’s failure to advance and Mourinho’s recent outspoken remarks about the club’s management as key factors behind the split.
In an official statement posted on its X account, Fenerbahçe expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his commitment during the 2024–2025 season and wished him success in his future endeavors. However, the statement made clear that the club is moving forward with a new leadership structure, signaling a fresh start after the Champions League setback.
The separation was triggered in part by Mourinho’s controversial comments when asked about club vice-president Hamdi Akin, who had publicly predicted an easy match and assured qualification against Benfica.
Mourinho responded with pointed remarks, stating: “Believe it or not, but I don’t know who he is… I simply don’t know who he is.” These words appeared to dismiss the vice-president’s role and influence, sparking backlash within the club.
Fenerbahçe’s elimination at the hands of Benfica, with scores of 0–0 and 0–1, means the club will compete in the Europa League this season instead. The Champions League exit, combined with Mourinho’s caustic comments, prompted the club’s decision to sever ties, underscoring tensions behind the scenes.
The move marks a turning point for Fenerbahçe as they prepare to regroup and refocus on their Europa League campaign. Mourinho’s high-profile departure leaves questions about the club’s direction and who will next take charge of the team’s ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
