The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has strongly condemned the racial abuse suffered by Ghanaian forward Christopher Antwi-Adjei during Schalke 04’s DFB-Pokal first-round clash against Lokomotive Leipzig on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

The Ghanaian forward was targeted with racist insults in the 13th minute while taking a throw in a moment that led to a brief stoppage in play as the stadium addressed the incident.

Section of the Lokomotive Leipzig supporters persisted in booing Antwi-Adjei each time he touched the ball throughout the remainder of the match.

The GFA described the abuse as “evil” and emphasized that racism has no place in football or society. In a moving statement, the GFA pledged its full support to Antwi-Adjei and called for unity in the fight against hate in the sport.

The association praised Antwi-Adjei for his strength in facing the abuse, stating, “Christopher showed incredible strength in the face of hate reminding us all that dignity and character will always rise above ignorance.”

The GFA urged the football community and society at large to reject racism and embrace equality, reinforcing that football should be a force for unity and love. Antwi-Adjei has since lodged a formal complaint with local authorities, prompting a police investigation into the racist incident.

Schalke 04’s sporting director Frank Baumann and head coach Miron Muslic publicly condemned the behavior, reiterating the club’s commitment to combating racism and supporting their player.

The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing challenge of racism in football, fostering calls from clubs, fans and governing bodies to uphold respect and equality on and off the pitch.
