The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has issued a directive to all clubs in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) to ensure that no player receives a salary below the minimum threshold of GH¢1,500 per month.
This initiative aims to uplift the wages and improve the working conditions of professional footballers across Ghana’s top-tier league. The new policy will take effect from the beginning of the 2025/26 season.
This move follows a collaborative meeting between the GFA and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), reflecting a joint commitment to professionalizing football standards within Ghana.
The GFA’s official statement highlighted that the salary minimum is part of broader efforts to enhance player welfare and the overall quality of the domestic game.
According to the GFA, the introduction of minimum salaries extends beyond the Premier League, covering players in the Division One League (DOL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
In addition, the football governing body has implemented a standardized contract template for professional players, which is already being used by Premier League clubs nationwide. This has laid a strong foundation for the new salary guidelines.
The GFA described the establishment of the salary floor as a significant “policy shift,” which follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PFAG before the association’s last Congress.
