Defending champions Ho Tennis Club lost the final match of the Asogli Te Za (Yam Festival) Tennis Tournament to Goldfields Tennis Club from Tarkwa, 6-7(3-7) and 5-7, allowing Goldfields to clinch the 2025 title.
Goldfields Tennis Club, elated about their victory, credited their win to hard work and determination.
“We are the champions! We are happy to have beaten the defending champions. Next year we will be back to win it again. Tarkwa, we are the best!” chanted the crowd.
In the preliminary round, Goldfields faced GCB Tennis Club from Accra on the Green Court and won 4 out of 7 matches with scores of 0-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-5, 6-0, and 6-4.
Tarkwa’s victory over GCB paved the way for their final match against Ho Tennis Club, who had previously faced Winneba Tennis Club on the Blue Court, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-7(3-7), 7-6(7-4), 3-6, and 6-4 to qualify for the final.
In the end, Tarkwa’s skill and determination paid off, earning them the top spot in the 2025 Asogli Tennis Tournament.
Before the final crowning, the leadership of the Ho Tennis Club honored individuals who have distinguished themselves through their dedication to the club and its development since the inception of the tournament 14 years ago.
Mr. Buta-Buamah James received a citation for his hard work and dedication, ensuring that the Asogli Tennis Tournament became a staple of the Asogli State Yam Festival calendar.
Vice Chairman of HTC, Mawuse Foe-Ahorney, shared his persistent efforts to promote Ho Tennis Club and advocated for the tennis tournament to be featured as a flagship sports event in the annual Asogli Yam Festival program.
Other recipients of citations for appreciation and recognition included Amoako Boafo King for his generous support in renovating the club’s courts, Killian Adem for his ongoing commitment to the development of Ho Tennis Club, and Kartey Kumoji for his supportive role in the club’s facilities development.
Also honored were patrons Humphrey Buta-Buamah, Seth Ablorsu, and Justice Ernest Obimpeh for their relevant guidance and long service to the club.
This year, the tournament attracted high-level competition and entertainment, such as the Borborbor Night for arrivals and great camaraderie ahead of the main event, as well as the visit of non-participating clubs — Sole Lagoon Tennis Club, Prampram; Accra Social Tennis Club; and Fantastic 2 Tennis Club from Tema Community 25.
