World number one Jannik Sinner began his Wimbledon 2025 journey with a commanding straight-sets victory over fellow Italian Luca Nardi on Tuesday.

Despite entering the tournament on the back of two recent defeats, Sinner quickly dispelled any doubts, winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in just one hour and 48 minutes on Court One.

The top seed showed no signs of rustiness after a tough French Open final loss last month and dominated the match with a blend of precision and power.

Sinner’s performance was a stark contrast to that of his great rival Carlos Alcaraz, who needed five sets to overcome Fabio Fognini in his opening round.

Sinner, by contrast, converted five of his 13 break points and did not face a single break point against him, demonstrating control throughout the contest.

After a tightly contested first set, Sinner surged ahead in the second and completely shut out Nardi in the third, underscoring his status as a leading contender at SW19.

Speaking after the match, Sinner reflected on the significance of Wimbledon for him. “I’m very happy to come back here. It’s such a special place for me,” he said.

“Playing against another Italian is unfortunate for us, but one of us had to go through. It’s a new tournament, new chances, new challenges. One opponent at a time.”

This victory follows a period of change for Sinner, who recently parted ways with two members of his coaching and training staff. Despite this shake-up, his performance against Nardi showed no signs of disruption. With coaches Simone Vagnozzi and Darren Cahill still supporting him, Sinner appears poised to continue his strong form on the grass courts.

Sinner’s next challenge will be against Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic in the second round. Meanwhile, other seeds also made positive starts on day two, with Alex De Minaur defeating Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will remain on Sinner as he aims to capture his first Wimbledon title and add to his three major championships.
