Columbus Crew defender Jonathan Mensah has expressed concerns over the resumption of the Major League Soccer in the United States. The League will resume under the slogan MLS IS BACK. However, to ensure safety of the playing body and officials, the clubs are lodging in a “Bubble” in Orlando.  Where matches will take place at the Wide World of Sports Complex at the Disney Resort under strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols.

Officials announced the suspension on Thursday, March 12, 2020 with the MLS just two weeks old. This was as a result of the spread of COVID-19 in the States. The USA has recorded over 3 million cases with 918,000 recoveries. However, the resumption of the league has been greeted with enquiries on how safe it is especially after 10 player tested positive. This update resulted in the League officials withdrawing Dallas Fc.

The defender who has been with the Crew since 2017 in an interview with BBC discloses the need to return to his family in good health. According to him, “I am not worried about it but I am concerned about it. Obviously, if you are not in good health, you cannot participate in this tournament or any other games. I need to go back to my family the way I left the home. You want to go out there play, enjoy the game you love so much but at the same time you need to be careful and watch the way you move around.”

Columbus will kick-off their MLS IS BACK season against FC Cincinnati. Jonathan Mensah was named captain of the Crew in March.
