Liverpool Football Club has announced it will pay the remaining two years of Diogo Jota’s contract to his family following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward and his brother André Silva in a car accident on July 3, 2025. This compassionate decision, amounting to approximately £14.5 million, reflects the club’s deep respect and commitment to supporting Jota’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Since the heartbreaking news broke, thousands of fans have gathered at Anfield to pay tribute, leaving scarves, jerseys, candles and photos at a memorial site. The club is also planning to commemorate Jota’s number 20 jersey, with many supporters calling for it to be retired in his honor. Jota’s contributions were pivotal in Liverpool’s recent successes, including winning the FA Cup, two League Cups and the club’s 20th English league title.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, swiftly made the decision to ensure financial security for Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso and their three young children by honoring the full terms of his contract. Jota had signed a five-year extension in 2022, with a weekly salary of £140,000, translating to around £7.2 million annually. The payout will cover the remaining two years, underscoring the club’s dedication to its players beyond the pitch.

The football community has been visibly affected by the tragedy. Before Club World Cup matches, players wore shirts bearing the names of Diogo and André, with many, including Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves, moved to tears. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson also visited the memorial at Anfield, showing his grief and respect. The club has opened a book of condolence both at the stadium and online, with discussions underway to establish a permanent memorial for Jota’s legacy.

Liverpool’s gesture has been widely praised as a demonstration of class and solidarity in the face of loss. The club’s actions go beyond contractual obligations, highlighting a profound human connection and support for Jota’s family. This commitment ensures that while the football world mourns, Jota’s family will receive the support they need to navigate the challenging times ahead.
