The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in collaboration with Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd and KGL Group, officially launched the 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run event, scheduled for March 7, 2026.

This event aims not only to celebrate Ghana’s independence but also to affirm the nation’s collective health and future.

“This upcoming event is more than just a race. It is a powerful movement to foster community engagement, to promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen the unity”; said Wilhemina Asamoah, Chief Director,  Ministry  of Sports and recreation.

Catherine Morton, Race Director of Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd, also remarked, “On March 7, 2026 Ghana will take one giant step, not in commemoration of our independence, but also in affirmation of our collective health, vitality and future.”

Morton emphasized the importance of healthy living for national pride and unity, stating, “It’s a responsibility to live healthy, to live united and to live proud.”

She further described the event as a new national tradition that will reshape how Ghana celebrates independence: “Today marks the beginning of a new national tradition, one that will define how we as a country celebrate independence, not only through parades and speeches, but through the collective participation, energy and movement.

”She highlighted that the vision of the Independence Day run aligns with the aspirations of President John Dramani Mahama to foster a healthier and united Ghana.

Mr. Andrew Agbo Kitcher, Vice President of Ghana Athletics, reflected on the significance of athletics in the country’s identity, noting, “Athletics has always played a vital role in shaping Ghana’s national identity.”

He added that “Running has served as a symbol of resilience, determination and collective pride,” linking the event to Ghana’s rich sporting heritage.

Kitcher also praised those supporting mass sports participation and community fitness, saying, “Ghana Athletics salutes the foundation for its steadfast dedication to mass sports participation and community fitness.”

The collaborative effort between the Ministry of Sports, Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd, and KGL Group signifies a commitment to enhancing public health through sports while fostering national unity.

The March 7 event promises to engage Ghanaians nationwide in a vibrant display of energy and togetherness beyond traditional independence celebrations.

This initiative marks a proactive step toward integrating fitness and collective pride as key elements of Ghana’s national culture.

Ghanaians are encouraged to actively participate in this historic event, which seeks to build on the spirit of independence with a focus on vitality, unity, and shared responsibility for well-being.
