Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Owen Kwame Frimpong, addressed Parliament to commend the Black Queens for their impressive journey to the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

He especially lauded the team’s crucial victory over Algeria, which lifted the spirits of his constituents, many of whom placed bets on the Black Queens and celebrated their winnings without the usual 10% tax deduction.

Mr. Frimpong expressed the collective joy of his constituency, noting that the removal of the betting tax by the current administration has ensured that bettors receive their full winnings. “The people in my constituency are happy the Black Queens made them win bets and there was no 10% tax,” he stated during his speech.

The Black Queens’ upcoming semifinal match against Morocco marks a historic first-ever encounter between the two sides in WAFCON’s 13 editions. Scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 7:00 PM GMT at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, this clash holds high stakes as Ghana vies for its first final appearance in nearly two decades while Morocco aims for consecutive finals on home soil.

The Black Queens’ journey to the semifinals has been a testament to their resilience and skill. After a rocky start with a loss to South Africa and a draw in the group stage, they made a strong statement by advancing past Algeria in the quarterfinals through a tense penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan was pivotal in the victory, making crucial saves to secure Ghana’s place in the semifinals.
