Paris Saint-Germain, PSG, secured their maiden UEFA Super Cup triumph on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 overcoming Tottenham Hotspur in a thrilling match that went down to a 4–3 penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw in regular time.

The contest, held in Udine, Italy, marked the traditional season opener clash between the Champions League winners and Europa League champions from the previous campaign.

Luis Enrique’s PSG fielded a strong lineup, largely unchanged from their victorious Champions League final against Inter Milan in May, though Gianluigi Donnarumma was absent following a surprise exit from the goalkeeper position.

Opposing them was Tottenham Hotspur, under new management with Thomas Frank in his first official game, eager for a strong start to the European season.

Tottenham started brightly, despite PSG’s dominance in possession, taking a commanding 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Micky van de Ven and an own-goal by Lucas Chevalier, the French goalkeeper who had replaced Donnarumma and endured a tough night.

João Palhinha also came close to scoring on his Spurs debut, testing Chevalier’s reflexes just before halftime.

PSG mounted a stirring late comeback with substitute Lee Kang-in scoring to reduce the deficit and then Gonçalo Ramos heading in a dramatic equalizer deep into stoppage time.

The comeback showcased PSG’s resilience and quality, setting up a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.

In the shootout, PSG regrouped to overcome an early miss by Vitinha and clinched the victory when Nuno Mendes converted the decisive penalty.

Despite some valiant efforts from Tottenham, including a penalty goal by Pedro Porro, PSG emerged victorious to lift the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in their history, further cementing their status as Europe’s elite.
