Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, Dr Randy Abbey, has expressed deep disappointment over Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing it as a significant letdown for Ghanaians.
The Black Stars ended their AFCON qualifying campaign at the bottom of their group, securing just three points from six matches, for the first time in over two decades,
The absence from the continental tournament stunned fans and stakeholders, as Ghana has traditionally been a strong football force in Africa.
Dr Abbey admitted the outcome was painful but emphasized that dwelling on the failure would not change the reality.
“You can’t cry over spilt milk; you can’t reverse it; you cannot change it,” he remarked in a recent interview with Asempa FM.
Despite the setback, Ghana’s football supporters found consolation in the Black Stars’ exceptional performance in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“But fortunately, [there was] another major engagement, and if for nothing at all, the disappointment [of not qualifying for AFCON], the least you can do is to at least qualify for the World Cup,” he added.
The team topped Group I with 25 points, securing their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. This achievement, according to Dr Abbey, has helped ease the disappointment of missing out on AFCON.
Looking ahead, the Black Stars will discover their opponents for the World Cup group stage on December 5, during the draw scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C.
