Ghana is making a highly anticipated return to the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time since 2018. The Black Queens, who have missed out on the tournament for seven years are set to compete in Morocco, where the championship will be held from July 5 to July 26.
This marks Ghana’s 13th appearance in the competition and the team is determined to make history by winning the title for the first time.
The Black Queens have been drawn into Group C, where they will face tough competition from defending champions South Africa, as well as Tanzania and Mali.
Ghana’s opening match is scheduled for July 7 against South Africa, a clash that promises to be a thrilling start to their tournament campaign. The team is focused on securing a strong start to boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stages.
Currently training in Morocco, the Black Queens have shown promising form in their preparation matches. They have already recorded victories against Malawi (3-1) and Benin (4-2), demonstrating their readiness and competitive edge. Their final friendly match before the tournament will be against Nigeria on Saturday, providing a final test before the official kickoff.
Expressing national support, the Minister for Sports and Recreation conveyed the best wishes of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana.
“On behalf of the President and the good people of Ghana, I extend our heartfelt wishes to the Black Queens as they prepare for the Women’s African Cup of Nations,” he said.
