Graham Potter has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Sweden national football team under a short-term contract. He steps into the role with the immediate task of revitalizing Sweden’s struggling World Cup qualifying campaign. His contract covers the crucial November qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia, and it may be extended if Sweden advances to the playoffs or qualifies for the 2026 World Cup itself.
Sweden is currently facing a difficult qualification journey, with only one point from their first four matches in the group stage. This poor start led to the sacking of former manager Jon Dahl Tomasson. However, Sweden still holds hope of World Cup participation through their strong performance as group winners in the 2024-25 Nations League, which offers them a playoff chance in March.
Potter brings recent Premier League experience, having been dismissed by West Ham in September after a challenging stint. Despite his short tenure there, Potter expressed deep motivation and respect for the new assignment, highlighting Sweden’s talented players who compete in top leagues globally. He aims to create optimal conditions to ensure the team delivers peak performances to secure World Cup qualification next summer.
His first games in charge will be critical, with the away fixture against Switzerland followed by a home match against Slovenia in November. The Swedish Football Association and football director Kim Kallstrom have expressed confidence in Potter’s tactical skills and leadership, hoping he will unify the squad and maximize their collective strengths.
This appointment marks a swift return to management for Potter and a pivotal moment for Sweden’s hopes to reach the World Cup. The nation awaits to see if his guidance can reverse their fortunes and lead them to football’s biggest stage in 2026.
