Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has reportedly found a new club after his contract with English Premier League side Arsenal expired on June 30, 2025. The 32-year-old, who made 167 appearances for Arsenal since joining in 2020, is set to sign a two-year deal with Spanish La Liga side Villarreal, according to Spanish publication Football Espana.
The signing, however, depends on the outcome of his upcoming court appearance related to serious criminal charges. Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5, facing charges including five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault dating between 2021 and 2022.
The charges involve allegations by three women and were formally brought by the Metropolitan Police Service after the Crown Prosecution Service authorized them following an evidence review. These legal matters cast a shadow over his future in professional football as Villarreal considers the implications while negotiating his contract.
The potential deal with Villarreal, who finished fifth in La Liga last season and qualified for the UEFA Champions League via the European Performance spots, reflects Partey’s desire to return to Spain. Reports indicate the Spanish club will initially offer a one-year contract with an option to extend depending on his legal situation and performance.
This move would mark a return to La Liga for Partey after five seasons in England, including a successful spell at Atletico Madrid prior to joining Arsenal. Partey’s tenure at Arsenal saw him become a key midfield figure, although contract renewal talks ultimately failed, leading to his departure on a free transfer.
His exit coincided with Arsenal’s strategic reshuffle in midfield, including signings of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Nørgaard. Despite injury setbacks, Partey’s performances, especially in European competitions, were notable and earned praise from manager Mikel Arteta. His future now hinges not only on footballing terms but on the resolution of his legal case.
The coming weeks are critical for both Partey and Villarreal, as the club weighs the risks related to his criminal charges alongside his footballing value. The Ghanaian international’s next court appearance on August 5 will likely influence Villarreal’s final decision on extending his contract beyond the initial term, making this a pivotal moment in his career and legal affairs.
