Spanish club Villarreal have announced the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on a one-year deal for the 2025/26 season, with an option to extend for an additional year. The 32-year-old, formerly of Arsenal, will join the team immediately at Villarreal’s training ground, the Ciudad Deportiva.

This move marks a significant addition to Villarreal’s squad as they aim to compete strongly in La Liga and the Champions League next season Partey’s arrival comes shortly after a high-profile legal proceeding in London, where he appeared in court facing multiple serious allegations, which he firmly denies.

Villarreal acknowledged the ongoing legal situation but emphasized their respect for the presumption of innocence under the law, choosing not to comment further until the court reaches a decision.

Despite the controversy, the club is optimistic his wealth of experience will bolster their midfield. The Ghanaian international’s transfer follows the expiration of his contract with Arsenal, where he was a key player over five seasons.

Between 2020 and 2025, Partey made 167 appearances for the Gunners, scoring nine goals, and enjoyed his most productive campaign last season with 52 appearances, four goals, and three assists.

Interest from other clubs, including sides in Europe and Saudi Arabia, was noted, but Partey’s desire to return to Spain, where he first made his mark with Atletico Madrid, influenced his decision to join Villarreal.

Villarreal’s sporting ambitions played a major role in securing Partey’s signature. With Champions League football confirmed for the upcoming season, the club sees Partey’s leadership and top-level experience as vital to their campaign.

His ability to control the midfield and contribute both defensively and offensively aligns well with Villarreal’s style and objectives on the European stage.

The signing represents a new chapter for Partey as he looks to rebuild his career amidst challenging off-field circumstances. Villarreal’s commitment to the player despite the ongoing investigation indicates their confidence in his professional contributions and potential impact in the 2025/26 season.
