The European Union (EU) foreign affairs spokesperson has reaffirmed that “neither the EU nor any of its member states recognizes the SADR.”
This statement followed attempts by separatist groups to overstate the significance of the European Union-African Union ministerial meeting held in Rome.
Clarifying the context, the spokesperson noted that the EU-AU ministerial meetings are co-chaired and co-organized by both unions. “The agreed modalities provide that each party is responsible for inviting its own members,” the spokesperson said.
He stressed that the presence of the so-called SADR at the meeting was solely due to an African Union invitation, not one issued by the EU.
“Invitations to African members are sent by the African Union,” he explained.
In this regard, the spokesperson reiterated, “The EU’s position is well known: Neither the EU nor any of its member states recognizes the SADR,” adding that the entity’s presence at the meeting “has no influence on this position.”
