The Ghana Journalists Association, GJA, has condemned reports of death threats against freelance investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni, by a supposed political fanatic incensed by an opinion piece by the award-winning journalist on the outcome of the 2020 elections.

The Association therefore called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate, arrest and prosecute the suspect as swiftly and decisively as possible.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the GJA, Kofi Yeboah, also called on the police to provide adequate security to Manasseh and other journalists across the country who have similarly received death threats.

The statement said the seriousness of the police in these matters will help calm the nerves of journalists in particular, Ghanaians in general and foreign residents in the country about their safety and security.

It called on the President to condemn the death threats against journalists and give a firm assurance about their safety and security.

It also called on the National Peace Council, political parties, civil society organizations, including the International Federation of Journalists, the Federation of African Journalists, ‘Repporteurs San Frontiers’ and Ghanaians as a whole to condemn these threats which are becoming one too many.
