President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will soon begin a feasibility study to design a new Accra–Kumasi Expressway under the “Big Push” infrastructure programme.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Jubilee House, President Mahama said the expressway project is part of a broader plan to boost national infrastructure and ensure balanced development across all regions, including Ashanti.

“We will soon begin the feasibility study and design of the new Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” President Mahama said. “We hope to break ground early next year to start this important and transformational project.”

President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to major developments in the Ashanti Region. He mentioned that phase two of the Kejetia Market project, which had been delayed due to the government’s debt restructuring program, will resume and be completed.

He also announced plans to begin the Kumasi Outer Ring Road project. The first phase will reroute heavy-duty trucks through Ejisu to Mampong, easing traffic in the city center.

Other key projects include extending the runway of the Prempeh International Airport to accommodate larger aircraft, completing the Suame Interchange and related bridges, and improving city traffic under the Kumasi City Traffic Improvement Programme.

In the health sector, President Mahama promised to complete the Sewua and Afari Military Hospitals, as well as the maternity and children’s wards at the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

The President praised Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his leadership, dedication to good governance, and strong support for youth development through the Otumfuo Education Foundation.

“You have consistently stood for justice, fairness, and progress,” the President said. “Your leadership is not only compatible with democracy, it is essential to it.”

President Mahama concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to working with traditional leaders to achieve peace, development, and national unity.

  1. I have never been a fan of the NDC but if President Mahama were to make good on the promise to build an Accra-Kumasi Expressway, I would vote NDC for the rest of my life.
