The Ministry of Roads and Highways has announced the start of construction on the 47.1-kilometre Kumasi Outer Ring Road, a major project aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the Kumasi.
The project, which began in January 2026, is expected to be completed by December 2027. It involves the construction of a dual asphalt carriageway stretching from Atia on the Accra Road (N6) to Akom on the Offinso Road (N10).
According to the Ministry, the road will serve as an important alternative route for vehicles travelling between the southern and northern parts of the country, helping to ease pressure on roads within Kumasi.
The project will pass through five districts: Juaben Municipal, Sekyere South Municipal, Sekyere East District, Afigya Kwabre North District, and Afigya Kwabre South District.
During a one-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, inspected the progress of the project. He said the ring road will complement the Suame Interchange and help reduce heavy traffic in the city by diverting long-distance vehicles.
The Minister urged the contractor to ensure that the project is completed on schedule by 2027.
Work on the project is currently at an early stage, with the contractor clearing the Right of Way and setting up a site camp. Engagements with local chiefs and affected persons are also ongoing, along with assessments of properties along the route.
The contractor has assured the government that the project will be completed within the planned timeline.
