The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially filed an appeal against a ruling by the High Court in Kumasi, which acquitted and discharged Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, a former nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Juaben in the Ashanti Region.
Mr. Sarfo-Kantanka was at the centre of a corruption scandal after a video went viral showing him allegedly demanding refunds from assembly members. This came after his nomination by Former President Akufo-Addo was rejected by the Juaben Municipal Assembly.

Following the incident, the OSP charged him with 26 counts of corruption, claiming he offered bribes to influence the assembly members’ votes.
Although the trial judgment was initially expected in November 2024, it was delayed when the presiding judge was transferred. The final ruling was delivered on May 26, 2025. In the ruling, the court said the video evidence did not prove that Mr. Sarfo-Kantanka had committed bribery.
However, the OSP strongly disagrees with the court’s decision. According to the office, the ruling does not reflect the strength of the evidence presented, and the judge made serious errors in both law and fact.
As a result, the OSP has taken the matter to the Court of Appeal, stating that justice was not served in the High Court’s decision.
