The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, joined thousands of runners and sports enthusiasts on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Black Star Square to celebrate the 10th edition of the Millennium Marathon. This flagship event marks a decade of promoting fitness, unity, and grassroots athletic development in Ghana since its inception in 2015.
After delivering opening remarks, Minister Adams ceremonially flagged off the 5km and 21km races through the heart of Accra as the Start Referee. His presence underscored the government’s continued commitment to initiatives that promote preventive health, youth empowerment, and sports tourism—a key pillar in Ghana’s national development agenda.
In his keynote address, the Minister praised the marathon’s growth and international recognition over the past ten years. He applauded the organizers for their vision in fostering a platform that encourages healthy living and uncovers talents such as William Amponsah, who rose from local races to win a silver medal at the African Games. Adams emphasized this as a clear example of what Ghanaian athletes can achieve with proper support.
Minister Adams challenged stakeholders to expand the marathon’s reach to all regions of Ghana to increase participation and deepen community engagement. He reiterated the government’s renewed focus on sports, highlighting efforts such as reviving school sports, investing in infrastructure, and setting up a School Sports Agency to integrate sports fully into the country’s development strategy.
The Minister also announced the upcoming launch of the National Recreation and Wellness Programme, intended to institutionalize monthly fitness events nationwide. Set to begin later this month, this initiative aims to promote wellness, eco-tourism, and community bonding. The 10th Millennium Marathon served as a powerful prelude, reinforcing that health and fitness are both personal goals and national priorities.
